Together Can Be Streamed, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Romantic Bond.

Here's a test for long-term couples who appreciate scary movies: Sit down with your partner and view Together. The 2025 indie hit recently had its launch on a streaming platform on Hulu. Outwardly, it might appear like standard physical horror, but inside Together lies a intense contemplation about the ways we decide to love each other.

A Directorial Debut Exploring Relationship Dynamics

Together marks the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have stayed together for ten years. Married in real life in 2017, Franco and Brie contribute a special spark to their characters, expertly portraying both the joys and frustrations of a long-term relationship.

The narrative begins when the couple relocate from the metropolis to the countryside for Millie’s job. A commonly used plot device, sure, but that’s largely where the conventions conclude. Together evolves into as much a examination of mental states of the partnership as it is a film about physical terror.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While trekking near their country house, a tempest descends, and the protagonists fall into an subterranean cavern. After being trapped overnight there and managing to escape, a mysterious influence takes hold of the duo. This force creates a supernatural closeness between them that goes well past typical partnership.

The whole movie is a methodically building fright fest, interspersing elements of fever-dream horrors, unsettling (but tastefully done) biological grotesqueries, and surprisingly comedic exchanges (sometimes amidst something horrific). The director orchestrates these parts neatly and delivers them in a consistently growing atmosphere of fear.

Nuanced Portrayals

A great deal of Together is only Brie and Franco, and they skillfully illustrate numerous complexities to the characters’ relationship. Millie's sense of self and emotional bond is deteriorating due to a distance. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his unwillingness to pursue anything but his failing musical ambitions slowly bubbles to the surface.

Tim, on the other hand senses confinement and separated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve relocated rural and far away from his support system. He fears the idea of totally forfeiting his individual identity in another person. This fear is intensified by the circumstance he lacks a driver's license and needs Millie for mobility.

The director's cleverest decision is that he never makes one partner or the other the obvious villain.

Tim and Millie confront the sort of issues that arise in most partnerships after ten years. Fundamentally, they still love each other. They share moments of joy, comfort one another, and are vulnerable at times. But under the surface, there’s an unavoidable feeling of questioning about their bond.

Allegory and Meaning

While the otherworldly presence in Together symbolize these fears of unhealthy attachment and giving oneself over to a partner, the metaphor avoids being overly obvious or heavy-handed. Instead, these visceral horror elements present a perfect parallel to the relationship narrative. Both the horror and the drama enhance each other in harmony.

A Debated Finale

Together’s conclusion, which is best experienced firsthand, has created disagreement on the story's concluding statement about codependent relationships. Accounts suggest that those not in relationships have understood the narrative as a compelling reason for avoiding commitment. Meanwhile, certain partners having disagreements found that the film ultimately assisted them reconcile.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own interpretation could act as a telling indicator of how you perceive partnership. Will the finale sow a sense of discomfort and fear, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you see yourself in one of the characters and feel frustration, or simply look at your significant other and say, “I understand that choice”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an test you can embark on right now.

Together is available to watch on Hulu as of this moment.
