Pat Cummins has claimed over 300 dismissals in 71 appearances with an average of 22.10.

The Australian selection chief Bailey has stated that captain Pat Cummins will play a "major part" in the forthcoming England-Australia contest.

Speculation had been growing that the 32-year-old might miss the series due to a persistent back stress problem that was still troubling him.

Earlier indications from the squad suggested no official announcement had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the five-Test series kicking off on 21 November in Western Australia.

He revealed that the captain is progressing and remained hopeful about his chances of participating.

"We know that the window is narrowing and multiple considerations at play, not only his injury, but additional elements," he commented.

"The outlook is good. We firmly believe that he'll participate in a major part. With luck starting in Perth. Otherwise, we'll adjust."

Past Concerns

Cummins was ruled out the white-ball matches against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals in the previous weeks after examinations confirmed a stress reaction in his back.

Previous incidents include of recurring issues, with recurrences in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 causing him to miss several home seasons in four years.

He emphasized he would be bold in recovery efforts in his recovery plan to secure his spot for the Ashes.

Bailey noted that it was unclear if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his comeback but admitted it was "becoming urgent" for him to regain fitness for the initial match.

Backup Options

Should Cummins not be fit, former captain Steve Smith will take over the captaincy.

The talented all-rounder was recently pulled out from the ODI lineup for their one-day international series against the Asian giants as a preventive step because of discomfort in his torso.

The selector characterized it as a "minor" injury and stated that Green will play in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "well-prepared to deliver overs."

"We put so much time has gone into creating the schedule for him to be available for the opening match as an all-rounder," the selector detailed.

"He was only going to play the starting games regardless. His aggressive style the willow in shorter formats, if it causes any delay for 24 more hours, we opted to approach this more conservatively."
