Larian Studios Announce a New Divinity, Declaring it Their Biggest RPG to Date

The anticipation surrounding The Game Awards has been intense, especially after host Geoff Keighley posted a puzzling photo of a strange statue. The secret has been revealed. Larian Studios is working on a brand-new Divinity game.

Titled simply Divinity, the game was showcased with a daring trailer that included intense imagery, from a burning man to an orgy and the very descent into chaos.

Moving Beyond Original Sin

Anyone hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. Larian warned that a third Original Sin game to its beloved RPGs is not being worked on now.

That said, the developer described this new Divinity as a evolution of the core franchise. This phrasing suggests that the team could be building a real-time experience rather than another tactical title. Currently, we can only guess, as only a cinematic trailer is available.

What Makes Divinity Special

The Divinity series is universally respected and it's fair to claim it sparked the modern wave of complex computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for detailed worlds, choice-driven narratives, and deep class systems—elements that subsequently found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its setting is traditional swords and sorcery, what makes Divinity apart is the remarkable agency granted to the player.

Where many modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is packed with specialized paths only possible with a specific type of character with a personal story.

The series is also famously permissive, letting players to find creative solutions in narrative and gameplay. Most missions can be solved in diverse methods, sometimes in lateral fashion.

  • You might find an answer because you recalled something an animal companion shared.
  • Or, you could bypass a challenge by moving environmental hazards in a unorthodox way.

A New Chapter Begins

It is this design philosophy that have cemented the series to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games of all time. Now, fans can look forward to more where that came from in this legendary franchise.
