A recent study indicates that patients who discontinue popular weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on reduced body mass much more quickly than those who end conventional lifestyle plans.
Published data in a leading medical journal demonstrates that while obese people often shed about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the mass comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"Individuals purchasing such medications must be cognizant of the potential of rapid rebound weight gain when the therapy is stopped," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery means a return to pre-treatment weight within about a year and a half.
Weighing Treatments
The analysis, which reviewed 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, contrasted the effects of the injectable medications with other pills.
Scientists emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through dieting typically experience a less rapid weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Rapid Regain
Nutrition scientists believe the way of the drugs is key to understanding the heightened rebound.
These medications copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels far above than normal may cause the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could diminish sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating a significant risk."
A Chronic Condition?
Health authorities suggest the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts argue that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy might need to be life-long.
This view is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "highlight the chronic nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.
User Accounts
Individuals who have come off the medication explain a sudden resurgence of appetite.
"It was like a switch that goes on and you're instantly ravenous," said one woman.
This difficulty is worsened if users have not established lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Significant Interest
Recent estimates indicate that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire remaining high.
- Use is higher among women compared to men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
In conclusion, researchers emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent fix and long-term success relies on combined behavioural management.
