Presence
Soderbergh tests his film-making abilities through this nifty ghostly tale shot entirely through the eyes of the spirit. When a household with Lucy Liu as Rebekah and troubled teenage daughter Chloe settles into their new suburban house, the lens – as the unseen entity – follows them around. Chloe seems aware of the poltergeist, and it looks like defensive toward her. But why? This is an entertaining concept that avoids overstaying, including a revelation that could catch you off guard. Saturday 11 October, afternoon and evening times, Sky Cinema
This Self-Referential Film
Nicolas Cage embraces his eccentric image through this self-referential adventure. The Black Phone Horror
The director's contained scarefest remains effective despite the lack of a follow-up. Taking place in 1970s Colorado, a series of disappearances has left the children frightened. When Finney gets captured by the villain and held captive in a dungeon, he anticipates a fatal end. But the old telephone in the room keeps ringing, with ghostly voices giving advice, and the prescient dreams from his sibling Gwen may be his salvation. A solid creepfest. Saturday 11 October, nighttime, Film4
The Tammy Faye Biopic
In the struggle between spirituality and money, the winner is obvious for greed in Showalter's wonderfully garish true story of the disgraced TV preacher and her criminal husband. Garfield portrays the corrupt Bakker, who declares at the beginning, “God does not want us to be poor,”. Both individuals commence capitalizing on the American public's religious faith. It's an extravaganza of poor styling, overdone appearance and hypocrisy, though Chastain achieves to show the character in a likable light. October 14th, 1.15am, on Film4
