European Union Might Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Official States

The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the US on five Europeans involved in fighting digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including the French president accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on figures that were at the heart of efforts to enact legislation regulating American tech companies.

“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state online. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in criticizing the decision.

The bans were enacted on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

The DSA is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, while European leaders argue the regulations are essential to control hate speech and disinformation.

This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and Europe.

Other Developments Reported Today

In other legal developments:

  • A federal judge has blocked efforts to reduce federal homeland security funding to states that do not comply with certain immigration enforcement policies. The official stated the case was “a further instance” of tying federal aid to adherence to directives.
  • Authorization was issued for the dispatch of hundreds of national guard troops to a major US city prior to the holiday period, alongside an ongoing immigration enforcement operation.
  • The nation of Palau will consent to take in dozens of migrants from the US in return for increased assistance, after concluding a formal agreement with Washington.

Additionally, a congressional representative has filed a lawsuit to demand the stripping of the current president’s name from a well-known cultural institution in the capital.

Analysts point out that comments regarding Venezuelan oil reflect a broader belief in some quarters of “economic expansionism”, drawing comparisons with historical international actions.
