Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities found he posed a definite escape threat while under house arrest.

The one-time leader was convicted of plotting a government overthrow in the ninth month and given more than 27 years in prison, but he remained under confinement pending appeals.

Top Judicial Official Alexandre de Moraes said the move to detain the 70-year-old politician was a preventative measure after fresh information were revealed.

This included attempting to break his tracking device and a call for a public vigil that could facilitate a possible escape.

Court Filing Details Escape Concerns

In a filing authorising the custody, Justice Moraes said data from the centre monitoring Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the ex-president's aim to disable the tracking monitor to secure accomplishment in his escape.

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the disorder caused by the demonstration called by his son.

His offspring, Flávio Bolsonaro, who serves as a senator, called for a assembly of his followers near his father's house to take place on Saturday night.

Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on online platforms on last Friday: Will you battle for your homeland, or observe everything from your phone there on your couch? I call on you to battle with us."

He said the gathering would be so supporters could "pray for his health and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our country."

Embassy Asylum Concerns

Part of Justice Moraes's determination was the possibility of Bolsonaro's "relocation to foreign missions near the residence, considering that the probes revealed a background of planning to request asylum through a diplomatic representation", a declaration said.

The judicial paperwork underscores that the American diplomatic mission in the national capital, the capital city, is located around 13km from Bolsonaro's home.

Global Responses

Bolsonaro's legal woes have generated frustration from fellow populist conservative American leader Trump, causing him to impose a fifty percent tax on Brazilian product imports.

Bolsonaro is being kept in a Federal Police station in the capital and will experience a detention review on the following day.

Recent Judicial Appeals

It was only on last Friday that the his legal team asked the Supreme Court to allow him to fulfill his full incarceration period under home confinement, with digital surveillance.

They also asked that Bolsonaro be allowed to exit his dwelling for healthcare, saying he needed frequent medical attention for respiratory ailments and other ailments.

Details of Guilty Verdict

He was convicted of heading a plot aimed at retaining his authority after he failed to win the 2022 election to his political opponent, Lula.

Supreme Court justices said that he was aware of a plot which involved plans to murder Lula and his running partner, Geraldo Alckmin, and to detain and kill the presiding judge - the top judicial official who has been presiding over the former president's case.

The scheme was thwarted because it didn't receive the backing of the army and air force commanders. His successor was inaugurated without issue on the first day of 2023.

But a following week, on January 8th, many Bolsonaro supporters stormed and vandalised government buildings in the federal district, Brasília.

The security forces intervened and around 1,500 people were taken into custody.

The magistrates found that the rioters had been incited by Bolsonaro whose strategy, they said, was for the national armed forces to intervene, reestablish control and return him to office.

At the period, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the 27 years and three months sentence unreasonably severe".

He was also prohibited from seeking elected position until twenty-sixty - eight years later after the completion of his term.

The ex-leader called the legal proceedings a political persecution and said it was designed to prevent him competing in the 2026 presidential election.
